2. Prepare your home for extermination.

This is a great time to get rid of clutter or items you don’t really need. It will make your home easier to treat and the cost of the Bed Bug Prep will be lower with fewer items.

Make sure you have the correct Bed Bug and Egg killing agents and packing supplies on hand before you begin.

Vacuum all areas of your home thoroughly to begin. If you’ve had a Bed Bug Dog, focus on the areas that showed positive for Bed Bugs or nests.

After everything is clean, pack everything that can be laundered and heated, wash and dry these items on high heat to at least 120 degrees for 30 minutes or longer.  Pack and send out all items that need to be dry cleaned to a specialty Bed Bug Dry Cleaner.

Make sure before you do your Bed Bug Prep, you create a Clear Bin or a travel bag for each member of your household including Pets, and list all the items you will need to survive for about 6 to 8 weeks. Once you have heated and cleaned your items, you can safely pack your travel bag. You’ll have what you need to live comfortably while your household items remain safely packed for the entire extermination to avoid cross contamination, until you are confirmed Bed Bug Free.

Even items that have serious Bed Bug Infestations can be treated, but most people who have Bed Bugs in New York want to be cautious. Your exterminator may recommend that you get rid of badly infested wooden or fabric furniture. These items must be properly wrapped and marked and discarded according to the regulations of your building and the Bed Bug Furniture and Refuse Removal laws of the City of New York.

Last, remove switch plates and electrical outlet covers. Some exterminators want you to drill holes in the walls so they can spray additional chemicals into the walls to prevent re-infestation.  Then move all of your clean empty furniture away from your walls in each room that will be exterminated. This will enable your Exterminator to move around easily and properly spray your home.

3. Hire a bed bug exterminator

Make sure you’ve made arrangements for pets, children, people with chemical allergies or sensitivities, elderly, disabled or infirm family members to be out of your home for the correct amount of time – usually 4 hours and up to 24 hours. Most exterminators use products which can be harmful, so it’s important to be aware of how long you will have to be out of your home.  You can also find a Green Exterminator or use alternative, natural Bed Bug Killing Products.

What to do if you have Bed Bugs in Brooklyn https://bedbugprepny.com/resources/what-to-do-if-you-have-bed-bugs-in-brooklyn/ Wed, 11 Mar 2020 19:41:19 +0000 https://bedbugprepny.com/?p=3102 If you live in Brooklyn and think you may have bed bugs you may be wondering what to do about them, Bed bugs are making a comeback after being close to extermination in this country in the 1940s and this variety of bed bug is even harder to get rid of. First it is important to establish whether your home in Brooklyn has bed bugs before you take the steps to exterminate them, the methods used for bed bugs is somewhat different than that used for fleas, and requires a few different steps since bed bugs tend to hide in more places.

Don’t wait!

Bed bugs are flat wingless creatures that tend to live in your bedding but may also live in a number of other places as well. Their size and shape allows them to survive in many cracks and crevices unseen, they can also hide in excessive clutter that you may have lying around your house, furniture, or in carpets, wall molding, and even loose wallpaper. Bed bugs can survive up to a year in a vacant apartment without a host to feed on. If you are moving to an apartment in Brooklyn bed bugs may be an issue so you may want to have it sprayed before you move in.

One of the most important things you need to do when you find out that your apartment in Brooklyn has bed bugs is to clean your apartment thoroughly. You will need to have a professional service come out and spray your home but before they can do that you should clean your home top to bottom otherwise there is a good chance that the bed bugs will come back. Start by removing all the excess clutter from your home, be sure to clear under bed, in closets and anywhere there is clutter that can harbor these pests.

You may wish to have a professional cleaning service come in and steam clean all of your carpets and furniture, this will get rid of a lot of the bed bugs all on its own. Keep in mind that the old advice that keeping your house clean will prevent bed bugs and will get rid of them simply will not work. While a good cleaning will help to eliminate many of them, when you have bed bugs in the wallboards there is simply no way that the bed bugs in your Brooklyn apartment will be eliminated by a thorough bed bug prep.

A professional cleaning designed for bed bugs however will eliminate the majority of an infestation provided it is not a severe one. Once your home is clean then you can have an exterminator come out and complete the process if necessary. It is a good idea to use a professional to take care of bedbugs in your Brooklyn home, this will ensure they are thoroughly eliminated the first time. If you would like more information about bedbug and assistance in eliminating them from your home Bed Bug Prep NY can help.

Here is an article from CBS news about the current Bed Bug Situation in New York. We found some of this information about protecting yourself from Bed Bug Infestation very helpful.

NEW YORK (CBS 2) – Bedbugs have been invading New York City, popping up at public establishments in Times Square, SoHo, and Brooklyn recently. Now, many residents are wondering what they can do to stave off the bugs.

People are the mass transit for bedbugs, as the creepy crawlers hitch a ride on your clothes and end up in your home.

There’s no need to worry though, as CBS 2’s Kirstin Cole learned about the latest weapons in the bedbug battle from the experts.

The pest management conference at Rutgers University is where the big guys go to check out the latest in battling bedbugs.

“They’re the hardest to get rid of – once you get them, they require a lot of labor and a lot of work, and there’s the creep factor,” urban etymologist Paul Bello said.

Bello specializes in fighting large-scale bedbug infestations, and his commitment runs deep.

“I have bedbugs at home that I to feed. See those little red dots?” Bello said.

He lets bed bugs feed on him every eight weeks as part of his research.

The pest control industry is embracing everything bedbug. It turns out consumers will pay hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars to get rid of the pests.

Chemicals and traps were everywhere at the conference, as were mattress wraps to protect your bed from the bugs. Pest Heat will send a boiler-hot blast into your home to rid it of pests, or Bed Bugs and Beyond will take a whole-home approach to fumigation.

If the bugs finally force you out of your home, you can fumigate your entire moving truck for $1,500.

Experts say people are the carriers. Bedbugs are exploding in retail, as seen when our canine expert, Ellie, found them at four out of six locations on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue during a CBS 2 undercover investigation. The bugs hitchhike in on returned merchandise, and with employees’ and shoppers personal belongings.

For that reason, anything bought at a store should get 20 minutes in the dryer when it comes home. The heat of the dryer will kill the bugs and their eggs.

Dr. Steven Kells trains and lectures for hotels and stores, and warns that being proactive is vital to keeping the pests away.

“What you want to avoid is the mobile population of bedbugs, the bedbugs that are going to get onto your dirty laundry, are going to get into your suitcase, and are going to be carried home with you,” Dr. Kells said.

When you’re staying at a hotel, it’s a good idea to check out your room immediately. Pull back sheets and inspect ticking at all four corners of the mattress. Then look behind the headboard and inspect the luggage valet rack.

Stay bug-free by storing your luggage in the bathtub, which bedbugs can’t climb, and keep all toiletries zipped up in bags – it’ll keep you from bringing home unwanted souvenirs.

Another tip: when you’ve been in any public place you suspect could have bedbugs, go home and immediately change out of your clothes, put them into a closed plastic bag, and get them directly into the dryer for 20 minutes.

Our experts say it’s a trick that has kept them bug-free for years.

How to Check for Bed Bugs https://bedbugprepny.com/resources/how-to-check-for-bed-bugs/ Tue, 30 May 2017 21:04:30 +0000 https://bedbugprepny.com/?p=2312 Today we’re going to talk about everyone’s favorite topic: bed bugs. You may have woken up with an itchy red bump, or maybe you have a friend who’s dealing with them and want to make sure you don’t have bed bugs yourself. If you have to ask yourself “do I have bed bugs”, then it’s probably a good idea to check for bed bugs.

In the interest of saving you time and money, here are a few ways you can check for bed bugs without paying for someone to check or hiring a fancy bed bug sniffing dog.

Firstly, you can check the most obvious place: the bed. Look under and all around the mattress and frame for any signs of bed bugs. It could be their tiny 1mm white egg casings, little dark spots (bed bug excrement) or the bed bugs themselves.

What do bed bugs look like?

You’ve probably seen enough pictures by now, so here are the basic characteristics:

1/4″ flat, generally brown, oval shaped bugs with ridges on their exoskeleton. Roughly the shape and size of an apple seed. The more recently they’ve fed, the longer their shell will be. Know that they can be white in color if they haven’t fed recently, and if they’re not adults it can be very difficult to spot them.

Places to check for bed bugs.

Although they’re called ‘bed’ bugs, they’ll often inhabit many different locations in your space:

  • Mattresses and bed frames
  • In seams of couches and under cushions
  • Folds of curtains
  • Even tiny openings in walls like loose wall-paper or outlet covers
  • Unfortunately, pretty much anywhere

You have to be a proper detective and check for signs and clues; the more clues you find, the more evidence you have. Search images online to see if your clues match those of actual bed bugs and go from there.

If you suspect bed bugs, you can then set up a simple trap by mixing sugar, water and yeast in a coffee cup placed on an upside down bowl. Detection is vital to catching the infestation before it gets out of hand. Here’s the recipe for the DIY trap / bed bug detector.

What to do if you have bed bugs.

When you call a pest control or bed bug removal company, the first thing they will tell you to do is to prepare your space. This can be a difficult process and involves sterilizing and sealing your belongings, moving furniture, and a lot more.

Your space needs to be prepared properly so the exterminator can do their job with a maximum potential for wiping out the bed bugs, while minimizing the possibility of re-infestation.

We’ve been in the bed bug preparation business for over 5 years, fine-tuning our process to match the requirements set by professional exterminators, and helping people all over New York rid their homes and businesses of bed bugs.

We understand how physically and emotionally exhausting this can be. That’s why we work with you every step of the way, making sure things are done the way you want them, while meeting all required preparations, and even finding you the right exterminator for the job.

10 Ways to Keep Safe from Bed Bugs! https://bedbugprepny.com/resources/10-ways-keep-safe-bed-bugs/ Fri, 31 Mar 2017 17:37:15 +0000 https://bedbugprepny.com/?p=2190 It’s true that Bed bugs are taking over New York. According to statistics 1 in 10 apartments has bed bugs. That’s a frightening amount of bugs.

I recently had the displeasure of suffering through 6 months of bed bug infestation in my own personal residence. Like most landlords, mine wanted to save money and deny the magnitude of the problem. It could have been solved in 4 weeks (and I will tell you how in part 3, I promise) but this infestation took 6 months to clear up because of poor choices made by the landlord.

Even though I have been helping my clients recover from their own bed bug infestations for the last 15 years, there’s nothing quite like going through the experience yourself to really help you understand the pain.

Preventing Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can hitchhike on your back pack- or walk down the hall from your infested neighbor. It’s too easy to get them and difficult to get rid of them. There are a few simple precautions that every New Yorker should take to lower the likelihood of bringing bed bugs home.

1- When you are out, don’t put your bags and coat down low on a floor or a chair – if you can hang things up high – that’s better. Remind the children about this too. If they are rolling around low down – -inspect them when they get up.

2- If you stay at a hotel strip and check the bed. Keep your luggage in the tub while you find out if your room is safe.

3- It’s an epidemic and New Yorker’s are tough. After a social event or a movie, it’s acceptable for you and your friends to check each other before going home. Bed Bugs are not microscopic – you can see them. They are small brown or black bugs that look like baby cockroaches.

4- At home, use Food grade Diatomaceous Earth ( DE ) powder in cracks and crevices – and inside the walls, open plugs and light switches – puff some powder inside the walls with a plastic hair treatment bottle and close it back up again. They crawl through the microscopic blades, lacerate their exoskeleton, dry up and dehydrate. Better them than you. By the way, DE is good for your pets- dust some in their fur and no more fleas and ticks.

5- Seal your apartment. Caulk or silicone all cracks and crevices you can see. Check baseboards. Check around heating pipes and radiators, and on the ceiling around pipes that go to your upstairs neighbor. Look under sinks where plumbing enters. This can keep Bed bugs from strolling across the hall from an infested neighbor just to have you for a snack.

6- Ecoraider! I love this product. It’s made from Cedar and Geranium and upsets the brain chemistry of the bed bugs. It has a very high kill rate ( same as pest control poison ) and is all natural and safe for people and pets. If you are as nervous as I am about getting bed bugs- Spraying Ecoraider in a perimeter around your home every 2 weeks is a smart precautionary measure. If any Bed Bugs come in to your environment, they are goners. You can order this great product on Amazon and watch some horrifying Youtube videos that show how well this product kills bed bugs. I have to admit I cheered a little.

7- Seal your mattress and boxspring in a high quality Bed Bug incasement. I did my pillows too. I like AllerEase Ultimate Protection and Comfort Waterproof, Bed Bug, Antimicrobial Zippered Mattress Protector – Vinyl Free & Hypoallergenic – 10 Year Warranty.. It was more expensive but very sturdy. It felt nice and the zipper was high quality with a flap seal so there was no open space for bugs to get in or out. The smart thing about this is, if you do get bed bugs they cant nest in your mattress or box spring. Spending $100 can save you the price of a new bed.

8- Move your bed away from the wall and tables. Just a few inches. Don’t make it easy for them to climb up and get to you.

9- Put bed bug traps under your bed legs. They are very inexpensive – you can get a good set for less than $20. If a bed bug does get in, and comes looking for a meal, this trap will stop them from climbing your bed legs and sucking your blood. You can check your traps each morning and sigh with relief when you find them empty. If you do find a bug – get the Ecoraider!

10- It’s a great time to get rid of clutter. Do you really need those jeans you wore in high school? It’s much easier to prevent an infestation if they don’t have a lot of places to hide. Think of it as a Zen opportunity to simplify your life. When we help people get rid of bed bugs, folks who have a lot of clutter spend at least 10 times as much money to prepare for the exterminator, Sometimes thousands of dollars, just for sorting, bagging and checking. You can prevent that, by streamlining now.

Don’t sit up biting your nails tonight, and watching the crack under your bedroom door.
I’m not saying that you are going to get bed bugs, but it has gotten pretty bad and there’s no sign that we’re wining.

I believe if we work together smartly, we can keep our space safe and stop them from spreading so easily.

Remember, if you think you may have bed bugs or you just have some questions, feel free to call Great Green Cleaning: 718-369-9000

We will take the time to answer your questions thoroughly and give you as much free information as you need, so you can rest easy tonight.
